A library of tried and tested 'off-the-shelf' workshops built around all students Working Mathematically in best practice classrooms:

We also tailor courses to meet your needs. Programs vary from two hour 'after school' sessions to extensive on-going programs in all areas of mathematics at all primary, secondary and teacher training levels. We believe:

  • The teacher in the classroom is our greatest resource.
  • Mathematics learning involves using materials.

for this year ... and beyond.

Background

For at least two decades, we have been collecting success stories from classrooms. Teachers have found the hands-on presentation of these stories in a challenging workshop environment to be both practical and thought-provoking. Maths on the Move offers a suite of one day and six day workshop courses which have been successfully used by schools and systems to inspire teachers and encourage curriculum shift.

Your Fractions in a Fraction of the Time session has revolutionised my teaching.

For the last two years I haven't enjoyed teaching maths, but tomorrow I am really looking forward to it.

Thank you again for your work with the Numeracy Professional Learning team - I think the sessions have had a significant impact on the teachers involved.

Courses address many issues frequently identified by teachers. They can be presented by our leaders, or we can prepare and resource key system leaders, who are then able to connect the courses to official curriculum documents.

Objective

Typical workshop
Learning to Work Like a Mathematician
A Maths on the Move course adapted to the needs of a cluster in Cairns.
Resources from the Task Centre Kit for Aboriginal Students and Maths300.

Our objective is 100% professional development - more success more often for teachers and students. We see no 'magic' in any materials. It is teachers who weave magic in the classroom. We offer practical, hands-on, professional support which draws ideas and resources from decades of classroom experiences. We want to encourage all teachers to enter the debate about what makes better mathematics learning.

  • Our experienced consultants can provide teacher development courses anywhere in the world. We have been involved in such programs from Stockholm to Hobart and New Hampshire to Northern Territory.
  • Choose from our MOTM Workshop Library or consider other options in the Professional Development Partnerships link above.

Principles

In our Workshop Library we offer a range of six day and one day courses. The one day courses can stand alone, or be built into a series over time.

Providing time is a major objective of each session:

  • time to explore mathematics
  • time to explore teaching craft
  • time to reconsider educational research
  • time to engage in debate with colleagues
  • time to reflect on personal best practice
Workshop Set Up
A Maths on the Move workshop room ready to roll

Numbers are limited to workshop size of around 30.
Parent participants are welcome at any sessions.

Maths on the Move workshops are resource dependent. Teachers make use of problem solving support materials in the workshops, discover the pedagogical and mathematical depth they embrace, then take a sample back to school to support their on-going personal exploration and to assist in retelling the story to others. Printed material is also supplied. To gain greater benefit for your schools, we recommend that at least two teachers attend from each school.

Our courses are backed up by extensive support which includes:

  • hands-on problem solving tasks applicable to a wide range of student ages and abilities
  • whole class problem solving investigations for mixed ability, multiple intelligence classrooms
  • detailed lesson plans and teacher-created software consistent with the objectives of all official documents and consistent with accepted research on teaching and learning
